Living in Italy<\/strong> becomes very complicated if you don\u2019t know a little Italian<\/strong> because not everyone here knows English so well to be able to converse<\/strong> with you without misunderstanding (German and French are spoken in border regions such as Trentino Alto-Adige and Valle d’Aosta).<\/p>\n

This explains why Italian gestures<\/strong> are so incisive: we rely on our hands<\/strong> and facial expressions<\/strong> to be able to communicate with those who do not know Italian.<\/p>\n

After all, one of the most outstanding characteristics of our personality is linked to communication<\/strong>: we like to converse and spend time pleasantly<\/strong> immersed in chatting with friends<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n One language for the whole peninsula? Yes, but not really… <\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n

In fact, even if Italian is the official language, in the 20 regions<\/strong> there are about 31 dialects spoken<\/strong>, considered as real languages in themselves, for example Friulano or Sardo.<\/p>\n

The most spoken dialects are: Veneto<\/strong>, Napoletano<\/strong>, Friulano<\/strong>, Piemontese<\/strong>, Sardo<\/strong>, Lombardo<\/strong>, Emiliano<\/strong> and Romagnolo<\/strong>, Siciliano<\/strong> and Ligure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In general, statistics say that 45%<\/strong> of the population speak only Italian<\/strong>, 32%<\/strong> speak Italian and their own dialect<\/strong> and 14%<\/strong> speak only dialect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tuscany<\/strong> is the region where the Italian language is officially born<\/strong>, precisely in Florence<\/strong>, and the poet Dante Alighieri<\/strong> is for everyone “the father of the Italian language<\/strong>” because in the fourteenth century he gave value to the new language using it in the composition of his most beautiful and famous work: the Divine Comedy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He used the Florentine<\/strong> of 1300 which is still today, for 90%, the language we use every day when we speak and when we write (obviously over the centuries the language has evolved and changed, but the origin is the same).<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n

This does not mean, however, that the dialects<\/strong> are considered as less valuable expression, on the contrary!<\/p>\n

Some dialectal expressions<\/strong> have entered fully into the spoken and written Italian and it’s what enrich with color and liveliness <\/strong>our language.<\/p>\n

Some dialects<\/strong> are really very difficult<\/strong> to understand even for a native Italian, and each has its own precise musicality<\/strong> as well as grammar<\/strong> and syntax<\/strong>. Even in the same region different versions of the same dialect can live together depending on the location in which you stay.<\/p>\n

Usually in Northern Italy<\/strong> are older people<\/strong> who speak more<\/strong> local dialect<\/strong> because they want to prevent it from vanishing, instead in Southern Italy<\/strong> the percentage of young people<\/strong> who speak their own dialect<\/strong> is much higher than the rest of Italy.<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n

\n Some tips to feel “almost” italiano <\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n

In the most touristic Italian cities<\/strong> even if you do not know Italian you can juggle quietly because you will always find<\/strong> a native who can understand you<\/strong> and then relate to you in a normal way, but in smaller towns<\/strong> it becomes really difficult<\/strong> to live without knowing<\/strong> at least a few life-saving phrases in Italian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Even if it doesn\u2019t seem like it, an Italian always appreciates good manners<\/strong> so if you remember to say “per favore<\/strong>\u201d (\u201cplease”) and \u201cgrazie<\/strong>\u201d (“thank you”) with a smile you will be immediately welcomed as one of us.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another thing you can do to create the right mood is say hello with a “buongiorno<\/strong>” or “buonasera<\/strong>” or even a nice “ciao<\/strong>” can be good, the important thing is to remember to add a sincere smile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pay close attention to the use of swear words… they may be misunderstood<\/strong> if spoken too aggressively. The same applies to the gestures<\/strong> that are used to accompany the speech, some must be used with great caution to avoid bad situations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n
